With the recent drop in solar panel prices, financial barriers for home owners are beginning to fall away. Now homeowners can have solar panels installed for a fraction of the actual costs using federal and state tax incentives and pay less for their energy.
There are also companies like SunRun that will install and maintain the panels and charge the customer for the energy they produce, often times this is less than what the customer was paying the electric company using power from the grid.
California leads the nation in solar power installations. 51 percent of the residential solar systems installed through the first three quarters of this year were sold with these plans, up from 12 percent in 2009.
SunRun and competitors such as SolarCity and Sungevity are expanding into more states, including Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Last month, even internet giant, Google announced it would create a fund that local installers in every state can tap so they too can offer no-money-down plans.
Check out your local hardware stors like Home Depot and Lowe's to see if they have plans with local installers.
